Description: Democracy is world’s most popular and controversial system of government. Since the turn of the 20th century, democracy has increasingly become the norm worldwide such that even military administrations and other despotic regimes make pretensions about it. With particular respect to the African continent, in recent decades, the quest for sustainable development through constitutional representative and legitimate governance has made democracy, both desirable and challenging to the various African states and their citizenry. A key challenge to the contemporary democratic projects in Africa is the growing emergence of insurgent groups contesting the political space in many states, including the menace of Boko Haram in Nigeria, Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), in Mali, the Islamic State of the Levant and Syria (ISIS) in the Middle East and Al-Shabab in Somalia, to mention but a few.
